Colin Brown

Colin Brown (b. Dundee, 1962) is a Scottish painter whose mixed-media works are defined by their layered surfaces, thoughtful composition and quiet sense of discovery. Over more than three decades, he has built a distinctive international practice shaped by time spent living and painting in Florence, Düsseldorf and now on Scotland’s north-east coast.

Working intuitively, Brown builds his paintings through a gradual process of collage, mark-making, glazing and varnish. Found imagery, handwritten text and fragments of visual history emerge and dissolve across each surface, creating works that balance structure and spontaneity, depth and lightness.

His paintings invite a slower kind of looking – an exploration of memory, time and the textures that connect one place to another. Evocative yet restrained, they reflect an artist deeply engaged in the layered nature of experience and the beauty found within imperfection.
