Kimbal Bumstead

Kimbal Bumstead (b. London, 1986) is a multidisciplinary artist working across drawing, painting, sound, performance and video. With a background in performance art and a deep interest in mapping, his practice explores how places can be felt, remembered and reimagined through abstraction.

His paintings and drawings are built through a process of layering, reworking and erasing, allowing each piece to evolve organically. Rather than depicting a fixed scene, Bumstead creates atmospheric, shifting landscapes that feel both familiar and imagined - capturing the essence of a place rather than its exact form. Each work becomes a trace of movement and memory, shaped by an intuitive dialogue between artist and surface.

Alongside his visual work, Bumstead creates sound pieces, installations and video works using field recordings from specific locations. These works extend his exploration of place into the sensory and emotional, translating not just how a space looks, but how it feels to inhabit it.

Through this layered approach, Kimbal Bumstead’s practice offers a quietly immersive experience - inviting the viewer to connect with the subtle textures of place, memory and presence.
