About the artist

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter and pioneer of abstract art whose work remained largely unseen during her lifetime but is now recognised as a major contribution to early modernism.

Born in Stockholm, af Klint studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and initially established herself as a traditional painter of landscapes, botanical studies, and portraits. Alongside her formal artistic training, she developed a deep interest in spirituality, mysticism, and esoteric philosophies, including Theosophy and later Anthroposophy.

In 1906 she began producing a groundbreaking body of abstract work known as The Paintings for the Temple, a series of large-scale compositions created several years before abstraction became widely associated with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian. These paintings feature geometric forms, symbolic diagrams, spirals, and vibrant colour systems intended to explore spiritual and cosmic concepts.

Af Klint believed her abstract paintings were created through a process guided by higher spiritual forces and often worked as part of a small group of women artists known as The Five, who conducted séances and automatic drawing sessions. Because she felt the works would not be understood in her time, she stipulated that much of her art should not be publicly exhibited until decades after her death.

Only in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries did her work gain widespread recognition. Today, Hilma af Klint is regarded as one of the earliest and most significant pioneers of abstract art, with her paintings held in major museum collections and widely exhibited internationally.
