About the artist

Christopher Wood PPSSA RSW RGI is a Scottish landscape artist whose richly expressive paintings explore the relationship between land, sea and sky. Rooted in the elemental rhythms of the North Sea coast, his work emerges from direct experience of place, weather and memory - capturing atmosphere rather than geography.

A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art (BA Hons Drawing & Painting, 1984), Wood has worked as a full-time professional artist since his first solo exhibition in Edinburgh in 1987. He has served as President of the Society of Scottish Artists (2009–2011), following his tenure as Vice President (2006–2009), and was elected to both the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.

Now based in the coastal town of Dunbar, his practice is shaped by the shifting light and elemental power of East Lothian’s landscape. His process is layered and intuitive - walking, observing, then building and reworking the surface until balance and emotion emerge.

Wood’s paintings are held in public and private collections, including His Majesty King Charles III and his contribution to Scottish painting has been recognised with awards including the Sir William Gillies Award, the Armour Award, the James Torrance Memorial Award and the Glasgow Art Club Fellowship.
